Step 1

Measure the furniture

Every DuraCrafts product page lists the piece's width, depth and height. For sofas and larger items, also note the packaged (carton) size where listed — the box is usually a little bigger than the furniture itself. Can't find a measurement? Lodge a quick query via our contact page and we'll check the carton for you before you order.

Step 2

Measure your access path

Walk the route the furniture will travel — from the street to the room — and measure the tightest points:

  • Front door: width between the frame's inside edges with the door open (many Australian front doors are around 82cm — always check yours). Note the height too.
  • Hallways: the narrowest width, and any tight corners where the piece must turn.
  • Internal doors: often narrower than the front door — measure the actual room doorway.
  • Stairs: width between walls/banisters, ceiling height above the stairs, and turning space on landings.
  • Lifts: door opening width and height, and internal depth — tall items may travel diagonally.
  • Obstacles: light fittings, handrails, radiators, fixed shelving.

Step 3

The comparison rule

A piece fits if its smallest two dimensions are less than your tightest opening — furniture can usually be tilted or carried on its side. For a sofa: its height OR depth must be smaller than your door width, because sofas are carried in on their end or side.

Schematic — sofas travel through doorways on their end or side

Tight corner trick: measure the sofa's diagonal — from the highest point of the backrest diagonally to the front of the arm. If that diagonal is less than your hallway width, it will almost always make the turn.

Step 4

Things that make life easier

  • Many of our sofas and other pieces arrive with their legs unassembled (this varies by product — check the product page or ask us), which trims the carry height through doorways.
  • Modular and chaise sofas arrive in separate sections that fit through spaces a one-piece sofa never could — the best option for apartments and tricky access. Browse modular & chaise sofas.
  • Beds arrive flat-packed in cartons — access is rarely a problem; it's the assembled size that matters for the room.
  • Stone-top tables are heavy: keep the path clear and have the delivery spot ready.
